It's always good to catch up with independent cinema pioneer John Sayles – known for his films with a strong sense of place and richly defined characters. In his new film (his 18th) we meet Bernice and Fontayne, best friends since childhood. Time and trouble have taken their toll. Now one is a parole officer and the other an ex-con. Together they enlist the help of a disgraced ex-LAPD detective (Edward James Olmos), suffering from macular degeneration, to help find Bernice's missing son across the Mexican border.
